Plus 10 lots in demand at Goffs

Foals registered to the Plus 10 bonus scheme were in demand at the Goffs November Foal Sale last week where they sold for 50% more than non-registered lots.

Buyers paid a median price of €22,500 to buy horses registered for Ireland and Britain’s almost €7 million owner and breeder bonus scheme and of the 401 Plus 10 lots offered, 82% were sold in the ring compared with a clearance rate of 73% for non-Plus 10 lots.

Breeders consigning Plus 10 foals had paid a registration fee of €187.50 into Plus 10 and these horses on average sold for €7,500 more than non-Plus 10 lots; this equates to a 40 times return on the initial registration fee.

Buyer interest in Plus 10 fillies was also prevalent, with the draft of 159 Plus 10 fillies offered reaching a median price of €19,000 – well in front of the €10,000 (90% higher) paid for non-Plus 10 fillies.

Johnny McKeever of McKeever Bloodstock, in conjunction with Biddestone Stud, bought seven Plus 10 foals at a median price of €48,000.

Mr McKeever said: “We were pleased to be able to buy Plus 10 foals at Goffs. The scheme is always a consideration when looking at foals and yearlings and if we had to choose between two foals and only one was Plus 10 registered, I would always choose the Plus 10 foal because I am a big believer in the scheme.”

Buyers of Plus 10 foals must pay the Yearling Registration fee of €250 by 30 June 2016 in order to keep the horse registered for Plus 10.

After the horse is fully qualified for the bonus scheme, it can win an unlimited number of €12,500 bonuses in any of the 550 Plus 10 races for two and three-year-olds in Britain or Ireland from 2017. The breeder of the horse and its pinhooker will both receive a €1,250 bonus each time the horse wins a Plus 10 bonus race.
